Virus & Spyware Removal

Viruses, worms, trojans, spware and adware are collectively known as “Malware” (malicious software). Malware is secretly installed on a majority of PCs today, compromising security and often making machines unusable. If your computer is behaving poorly, there is a strong likelihood that virus and spyware programs are to blame. If your computer is not working as well as it should, we’ll identify and remedy the problem.

Norton, & McAfee – Not highly recommended

Independent research from multiple established and reputable sources has shown that Symantec’s & Norton, Network Associates McAfee are some of the biggest hogs of computer resources. These programs have been shown to be the leading cause of slow system startup. These programs install multiple background services and agents, and often run constant performance reducing scans while you are trying to work.  Purchasing only the Antivirus package for each of these products reduces the amount of background services and agents running but still does not guarantee that it will not hurt your computer's performance.

Grisoft's AVG free software - Recommended (in most cases)

AVG free edition has been providing solid free antivirus protection for all non commercial computers for a very long time.   If you are operating without antivirus software or are just tired of the cost and performace from other antivirus software packages, try this product.  We recommend that you test it out for a while before settling on this antivirus software.  In a variety of cases we have determined that AVG will run intensively on select computers due to memory issues within the software.  Test the software and if is seemingly bring your computer to a slow halt then uninstall it and try another antivirus.

Other recommended antivirus software:

  • Avast - Avast! is one of the few free programs that I still recommend. It has a good detection record, fast updates, and it's easy to install and operate -- free for home use, with free signature updates too. They have professional versions too, with increased capability.
  • Eset Nod 32 - Excellent detection record, fast updates, easy to install. Includes advanced heuristic scanning for unknown viruses.
  • VIPRE - by Sunbelt Software, is my personal antivirus choice. It's fast, accurate and easy on system resources. VIPRE combines antivirus and antispyware protection.
  • Avira Antivirus (has a free version but it includes popups) - Excellent detection record, few false positives, fast, with low system impact.
  • Kaspersky - First rate detection, and quick response time to new threats. 

 

Spyware software:

For the smart surfer we recommend only Malwarebytes AntiMalware (Free Version).  For most cases that we've seen, Malwarebytes AntiMalware has found and removed more infections than any other software we found.  For the unsavy surfer you will need more intensive spyware software or the paid version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware.  The paid version offers real-time protection which scans everything you are doing online.  Spybot Search and Destroy with tea timer is also recommended.  The tea Timer addition to Spybot Seach and Destroy pops up and tells you when something is making a change to your system.  This allows you to know when software wants to install and/or change something with your system.  Then it gives you the ability to block the software from harming your computer.  There are also a large variety of Paid Spyware programs and suites available.  We have only listed two here because these programs are what we mainly use and recommend.  Most Antivirus companies also offer some type of spyware protection.
